This crown or five shilling piece was issued from the Melbourne mint for Australia in 1937-38. It is the only crown struck for Australia during the sterling period. Sterling coinage ceased after 1964 and in 1966, the Australian dollar was introduced.
Sterling coinage was struck for several countries besides Great Britain, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, Fiji and New Guinea. All converted to decimal coinage in the 1960's.
Recorded mintage: 1,008,000 plus 100 proofs.
Specification: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver, .841 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, designed by T. H. Paget and George Kruger-Gray.
