This specimen was lot 72502 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $517. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. 1/2 Crown, 1987. NGC PROOF-68 ULTRA CAMEO. Struck in platinum. U.S. Constitution. Hard mirror fields with frosted cameo devices." The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland and remains a British dependency. It is famous for motorcycle racing and tailless cats. Token coppers were issued for the island in the eighteenth century but large production did not commence until 1971. About 1980, the island fell under the domination of the Pobjoy Mint, which has minted and marketed dozens of NCLT commemoratives. This denomination was also minted in gold.
Recorded mintage: 250 plus 12,000 in gold.
Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine platinum, .500 troy oz APW.
Catalog reference: KM-187a.
