Germany 1911-A 10 pfennig

Stack's Bowers February 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73805

This specimen was lot 73805 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. 10 Pfennig, 1911-A. Berlin Mint. Wilhelm II. PCGS PROOF-65. The only certified example with this mint and year, a lovely Gem with blue and russet toning throughout and RARE when presented in proof." This coin is a copper-nickel ten pfennig from a type issued 1890-1915 from the Berlin (mintmark "A", shown here), Munich (mintmark "D"), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted to the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. Wartime shortages forced the regime to convert the coin to iron in 1916-22.
