Stephen Album sale 47, lot 911

This specimen was lot 911 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Aurangzeb, 1658-1707, AV mohur, Itawa, year 2, fascinating variant, with the "n" and "pur" of the mint name separated (known only for this date), whereas they are almost always connected, best seen on the silver rupee (Zeno-79193), PCGS graded MS63. The date is theoretically AH1120, but the final digit is off flan on all specimens on CoinArchives and Zeno." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This is an issue of Shah Alam Bahadur (regnal year 2), not Aurangzeb. It was struck at 23 mints in all.
