This specimen was lot 31802 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $129.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carl XIV Johan 1/3 Skilling 1840, MS63 Red Brown NGC. Very attractive with a pleasing blend of mint red and brown surfaces. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." Prior to the reform of 1830, 48 skilling = one riksdaler; after 1830, 128 skilling = one riksdaler specie. As a result the skilling was reduced from 28.3 g to 11.3 g. This is a common date of a type struck 1835-43. The denomination was terminated in 1855. An 1840/37 overdate exists for the year.
Recorded mintage: 692,000.
Specification: 4.7 g, copper, 19.8 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 640.
