Nomisma Aste e-live-auction 3, lot 305
Aste 3-0305r.jpg

This specimen was lot 305 in Nomisma Aste e-live-auction 3 (Verona, Italy, May 2023), where it sold for 40 euro (about US$52 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted, "Papal States Pio IX (1846-1878) 10 Baiocchi 1858 An. XIII - qFDC." This type, struck 1858-64 at Rome, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The obverse legend was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended. The denomination was introduced in 1836 at 2.68 g, 0.900 fine, then changed to 2.85 g, 0.800 fine in 1858, then 2.66 g, 0.835 fine in 1865.

Recorded mintage: 2,548,000 (year XII and XIII).

Specification: 2.85 g, 0.800 fine silver, 21 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 2,85 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1342b, Munt. 20a, Ber-3316.
