Norway 1672-FG 4 mark Dav-3662

from Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73008

This specimen was lot 73008 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NORWAY. 4 Mark (Krone), 1672-FG. Christiania Mint. Christian V. NGC AU-55. A charming and difficult crown to encounter in more elevated states of preservation as is the case here. In fact, this represents the only occurrence of the date in the NGC census, and is surpassed there by just one other for the entire series." This coin is a little small to be classed as a thaler (an honor more properly belonging to the contemporary six mark or specie daler), but it has a Davenport number so we will include it. It was struck 1669-80 and is somewhat available. Norway passed from Danish to Swedish rule in 1807.
