Heritage sale 3038, part of lot 35248
Guatemala H3038-35248h.jpg

Shown is a 1786 one real from the new Guatemala mint, from a type struck 1779-87. In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Harris[1] notes that Guatemala is the second rarest mint (after Bogotá) for portrait one reales of Charles III; he counted over three times as many Mexico City one reales of the same type. This specimen was part of lot 35248 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), which sold for $763.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Charles III Real Lot 1772-86, including nine pieces with no date duplication in grades averaging F/VF. From The Santa Maria Collection."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.903 fine silver, .098 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11419, KM 33.2.
