CNG sale Triton XXVII, lot 6443

This specimen was lot 6443 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $98. The catalog description[1] noted, "Iran. Qajars. Fath 'Ali Shah. As Shah, AH 1212-1250 / AD 1797-1834. AR Rial. Type E. Imam 'alayhi al-salâm Mashhad mint. Dated AH 1245 (AD 1829/30). Fin[e] patina, worn at high points, minor peripheral weakness, edge marks, mount removed. Good VF. Attractive, well centered strike. Very rare. The "Imam" refers to Ali b. Abi Talib, the first Shi'ite Imam, whose shrine is located at Mashhad." This type was struck AH 1242-1246. The rial was superseded by the kran in the 1240's and was not struck after AH 1246.

Specification: 9.21 g, silver; this specimen 24 mm diameter, 8.97 g, 10 h axis.
