Heritage sale 3094, lot 34744
H3094-34744r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34744 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Commonwealth 6 Pence 1651 MS62 NGC, Sun mm. A stunning offering of an issue regularly encountered in lesser states of preservation, the coin at hand ranks as sole finest certified by seven full grade points. Enveloped in an undercurrent of golden resplendence with only minor striking weakness to the legends while the central devices remain crisp and lacking in any significant die shift. A highly commendable near-Choice Mint State selection. From the Long Island Collection." The gold coins of the Commonwealth (unite, double crown and crown) are all rare. The silver coinage is generally more available but often badly made. This type is listed with the sun mint mark for 1649-57 and with the anchor mint mark for 1658-60.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.01 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 3.04 g.

Catalog reference: KM 389.1, ESC-179 (prev. ESC-1484).
