Great Britain 1651 shilling
This specimen was lot 34746 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Commonwealth Shilling 1651 MS62 NGC, Sun mm. A wholly appreciable near-Choice Mint State selection from this coveted Commonwealth series, experiencing a much stronger, consistent strike atypical of these hammered issues, and displaying an even yet deep patination, having generously toned to a pervasive gunmetal while the reverse exhibits cabinet tone peppered with light reflectivity. A commendable offering with higher than average eye appeal. From the Long Island Collection." The gold coins of the Commonwealth (unite, double crown and crown) are all rare. The silver coinage is generally more available but often badly made. This type is listed with the sun mint mark for 1649-57 and with the anchor mint mark for 1658-60.
