This specimen was lot 74806 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $45. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 2 New Pence, 1973. Elizabeth II. PCGS PROOF-66 Brown. Brilliant, orange-brown patina that sheens purple when cast in the light. Impressively detailed and eye-catching." The pound was made decimal in 1968 and new denominations introduced. Only the old florin (equal to ten new pence) and shilling (five new pence) carried over from the old coinage. Over a billion of this denomination were minted dated 1971, and no more were struck for circulation until 1975. This design was used until 1981 but subsequent mintages were much more modest.
Recorded mintage: 100,000 proofs.
Specification: 7.12 g, bronze, 25.91 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-916.
