Schulman sale 347, lot 700

This specimen was lot 562 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,297 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"piedfort dukaton of zilveren rijder. 1718. op dubbele zwaarte. type IIIa. Ruiter naar rechts boven gekroond provinciewapentje met onderbroken tekst mo: no: aRg: confOE – Belg· pRo· tRanSi. Kz. gekroond wapen, jaartal in cartouche. Zonder binnencirkels. gladde rand en mmt. kraanvogel boven de kroon, geen interpunctie, slechts een punt aan het eind van het omschrift. RRRR. Vrijwel prachtig. uit veiling Schulman 27 van 22 apr. 2002, no. 612. (eerste euroveiling. coll h.K. Berghuijs, deel iii) -> uit veiling th. Bom van 17 aug. 1890, no. 1600 -> coll. W.e. Rijnbende -> coll. van dam. ons zijn slechts drie exemplaren bekend, waarvan wij er één verkocht hebben in 1954 aan de Nederlandsche Bank. (piedfort ducaton or silver rider of 1718, of double weight, type IIIa. Obverse: mounted knight leaps right over crowned provincial arms; reverse: crowned provincial arms, date below in cartouche. Very rare, nearly extremely fine.)"

This specimen is listed in Davenport for 1718, 1720 and 1727; it is unlisted in the SCWC. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Overijssel, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Utrecht, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
