This specimen was lot 1592 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$7,125 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
" BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR ducaton, 1686, Bruxelles. 4e type. Tranche inscrite. D/ B. cuirassé à d., les cheveux longs, portant le collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, soutenu par deux lions, orné du bijou de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver ducaton of 1686, Brussels mint, fourth type, lettered edge. Obverse: armored bust right with long hair, wearin the order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, the jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Very rare, very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1686-89, 1692-94, 1698 and is rare. The feeble reign of Charles II, the last of the Spanish Hapsburgs, was a disaster for Belgium, as the region was repeatedly invaded and devastated by the armies of Louis XIV. The turmoil did not end with Charles' death, as the powers of Europe fought a fifteen year war over partitioning the Hapsburg empire. In 1714, Belgium passed to Austria to keep it out of the hands of the French.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 32,69 g.
