This specimen was lot 3142 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 130,000 CHF (aboout US$155,129 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIUM | Brabant, Herzogtum, Charles II. 1665-1700 Ducaton dor 1687. Brüssel. Sehr selten. Nur 49 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich-FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, ducaton d'or of 1687, Brussels mint. Very rare. Only 49 pieces struck, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"
This scarce and expensive type was struck 1687-94 at Brussels and 1693, 1698 at Antwerp. The feeble reign of Charles II, the last of the Spanish Hapsburgs, was a disaster for Belgium, as the region was repeatedly invaded and devastated by the armies of Louis XIV. The turmoil did not end with Charles' death, as the powers of Europe fought a fifteen year war over partitioning the Hapsburg empire. In 1714, Belgium passed to Austria to keep it out of the hands of the French.
Recorded mintage: 49.
Specification: 44.36 g, 0.919 fine gold; this specimen 44.27 g.
