Obverse: a warrior in ancient dress stands, facing right, brandishing a sword before the lion of Brabant; reverse: crowned arms of Brabant between two crowned "B's". Very rare, planchet cracks on the reverse, nice patina, Very Fine.)
(After the flight of the Duke of Anjou, the States of Brabant and Flanders took the reins of power without recognizing a new prince. The minting of new gold and silver coins was ordered: gold lion and half-lion, écus and half-écus in silver called "Robustus" after the end of their legend. These coins were minted in the workshop of Antwerp while the city was under siege by Alexander Farnese. It capitulated on August 17, 1585, after a siege of more than a year and a heroic resistance led by Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde. Its fall marked the complete reestablishment of Spanish rule in the southern Netherlands. To take the city, Alexander Farnese had to close the Scheldt with a huge bridge of boats that the besieged tried in vain to break.)"
The second specimen was lot 1032 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,874 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
