Jean Elsen sale 135, lot 903
Brabant and Namur in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 903 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €180 (about US$249 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NAMUR, Comté, Philippe le Beau (1482-1506), billon double mite, 1503. D/ Lion rampant à g. R/ + IN DOMINO CONFIDO AO 1503 Croix pattée, un briquet en coeur. Très rare. Très Beau. (Spanish Netherlands, county of Namur, Philip the Handsome, 1482-1506, billon double mite of 1503. Obverse: lion rampant to left; reverse: cross patté, jewel at center. Very rare, very fine.)"

This type, which is catalogued as billon but appears to be pure copper, was issued during the reign of Philip the Fair, son of Maximilian of Austria, and served as the transition between Burgundian and Hapsburg rule.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon or copper; this specimen is 1,00 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 129-7a; Chalon, Namur, 221.
