Sincona sale 31, lot 9
Stephen Album sale 37, lot 584

The first specimen was lot 9 in Sincona sale 31 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,036 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OTTOMAN TUNIS | Muhammed III (1003-1012ah/1595-1603ce) sultani 1003ah (1595ce) AU R vf+. Ex Album 19:521." The second specimen was lot 584 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $2,023. The catalog description[2] noted, "OTTOMAN EMPIRE: Mehmet III, 1595-1603, AV sultani, Tunis, AH1003, with the darib al-nadr… formula on the reverse, superb strike, especially for this mint, lovely EF, RR, ex Ahmed Sultan Collection. The reverse legend translation: 'the striker of precious metal, and master of glory, the victorious on land and sea'." Friedberg lists no gold coins for Tunisia prior to the Turkish decimal reform of 1839. The SCWC mentions a sultani (KM 7, 3.5 g) for this ruler but no fractions. It is doubtless rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 3.5 g, gold, the first specimen 3.52 g, the second specimen 3.50 g.

Catalog reference: A-1340.1, Damali-TU-A1a (same dies), NP 330.
