Sincona sale 80, lot 2244

This specimen was lot 2244 in Sincona sale 80 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$569 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"GERMANY | Mansfeld, Grafschaft | Eigentliche Hinterortische Linie, Friedrich Christoph allein, 1610-1631. 1/2 Taler 1629, Eisleben. Sehr schön. Knapper Schrötling. (county of Mansfeld, Eigentliche Hinterort line, Frederick Chrisitan alone, 1610-31, half thaler of 1629, Eisleben mint. Very fine-extremely fine, Very fine, Small flan.)"

Mansfeld-Eigentliche-Hinterort was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. Count David ruled 1592-1628 and Frederick Christopher 1609-31; the line went extinct in 1666. This type is listed for 1622-24 and 1629. It is the most common half thaler prior to KM 229 of the 1660's. Anton Koburger was mintmaster in Eisleben 1615-32.
