Sincona sale 73, lot 1453

This specimen was lot 1453 in Sincona sale 73 (Zurich, November 2021), where it sold for 70,000 CHF (about US$90,062 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Königreich. Vittorio Emanuele III. 1900-1946. 50 Lire 1926 R, Roma. Äusserst selten. Nur 40 Exemplare geprägt. NGC MS65+. Prachtexemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz. (kingdom of Italy, Victor Emanuel III, 1900-46, Extremely rare. Only 40 pieces struck, Cabinet piece with nice mint luster.)"

This type, the last full size gold fifty lire, was struck in tiny numbers 1910, 1912 and 1926-27. Later gold fifty lire exist but are much smaller. The king, an avid numismatist, likely had these struck for himself and his friends in the coin club.

Recorded mintage: 40.

Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 49, Pagani 654 (R4). Montenegro 31 (R4). Fr-27.
