Sincona sale 91, lot 3170

This specimen was lot 3170 in Sincona sale 91 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 4,750 CHF (about US$6,277 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Batzen 1804, Bern. Probe. Geschweiftes Kantonswappen, im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl. Rv. Doppelte Wertangabe in Eichenblätter-Kranz. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Oxidationsflecken und Schrötlingsfehler. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, batzen of 1804, Bern mint, pattern. Obverse: cantonal arms, date in exergue; reverse: value in oak wreath. Extremely rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Oxidation spots and flan flaws.)"

This pattern, the first of its denomination struck since 1623, was not adopted. When batzen were struck for circulation in 1818, a different reverse was used.
