Sincona sale 91, lot 3163

This specimen was lot 3163 in Sincona sale 91 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$4,229 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Doppelduplone 1794, Bern. Vorzüglich-FDC. Kleine Kratzer auf Rückseite. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, double duplone of 1794, Bern mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Small scratches on reverse.)"

This type, struck 1794-98, depicts a standing soldier on the reverse. Another double duplone has a motto reverse (Fr-181). In Geneva, this coin was a double pistole; in Luzern, a 24 munzgulden, in Solothurn, a double duplone. The coin is modeled on a double louis d'or of France.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 15.82 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 15.26 g.
