Steve Album sale 39, lot 2679
SA39-2679r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2679 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "ZAND: Karim Khan, 1753-1779, AR abbasi, Yazd, AH1180, lovely ornate design, unique to the mint of Yazd, EF, ex Dabestani Collection." This abbasi, noted as "type C" in the Checklist of Islamic Coins, was struck at many mints including Yazd, where it is listed for AH 1179-1187. Wikipedia comments, "Mohammad Karim Khan Zand (Persian: محمدکریم خان زند‎) was the founder of the Zand Dynasty, ruling from 1751 to 1779. He ruled all of Iran (Persia) except for Khorasan. He also ruled over some of the Caucasian lands and occupied Basra for some years. Following Karim Khan's death, civil war broke out once more, and none of his descendants were able to rule the country as effectively as he had. The last of these descendants, Lotf Ali Khan, was executed by Qajar ruler Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar, who became the sole ruler of Iran."

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common mint.

Specification: 4.61 g, silver, this specimen 4.54 g.

Catalog reference: KM-522.15, A-2800.
