Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1708

This specimen was lot 1708 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1727 T, Nantes. D/ B. habillé à g., décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Fine griffe et très légères traces d'ajustage au droit. Léger défaut de flan au revers. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver écu of the olive branches of 1727, Nantes mint. Obverse: uniformed bust left, wearing the Order of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Fine scratches and some light adjustment marks on the obverse, planchet defect on the reverse. Extremely Fine.)"

This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Nantes mint, which struck this type 1726-40. Most dates are common. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Reported Mintage: 453,494, a common date. Two different privy marks exist.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers; this specimen 29,25 g.
