This specimen was lot 5230 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,115 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK, 1949-1990, 5 Pfennig 1968, A, glatter Rand. Kupfer. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (people's republic of Germany, 1949-90, five pfennig of 1968, plain edge, copper. Extremely rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This is an off-metal strike of the regular aluminum five pfennig that was struck in Berlin in 1968, 1972 and 1975.
Recorded mintage: 282,303,000 in aluminum.
Specification: normal issue: 1 g, aluminum, 19 mm diameter; this specimen copper, 18,79 mm; 3,13 g.
