This specimen was lot 4445 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $176.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. 2 Lire, 1916-R. Vittorio Emanuele III. NGC graded MS-65." This type was struck for the kingdom of Italy 1914-17. The weight and fineness matches that of a French two francs. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1917, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the two lire resumed in 1923, it was a nickel coin.
Recorded mintage: 10,923,000.
Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, reeded edge.
