Sincona sale 6, lot 1962

This specimen was lot 1962 in Sincona sale 6 (Zurich, May 2012), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,600 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Maximilian II. 1564-1576. Taler 1575, Joachimstal. Münzmeister Jörg Geitzköfler. Gekröntes, geharnischtes Hüftbild rechts mit Zepter. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen auf gekröntem Doppeladler. Winz. Randschlag. Gutes sehr schön. (Austria, Maximilian II, 1564-76, thaler of 1575, Joachimsthal mint, mintmaster Jörg Geitzköfler. Obverse: crowned, armored half-length bust to right, holding scepter; reverse: double headed eagle supports crowned arms. Very fine.)"

This particular type is a very early thaler; the joachimsthaler is the ancestor of our dollar.
