This specimen was lot 1567 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabruck, June 2015), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,100 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Doppelter Vereinstaler 1865, A, Wien. R Fast vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, double union thaler of 1865, Vienna mint. Scarce, choice extremely fine.)"
This rare type is among the last thalers struck by Austria, to be superseded by the double florin struck in various types 1859-92. In 1866, Austria lost a war with Prussia and was evicted from the German Confederation.
