This specimen was lot 1218 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $690. This type was struck in Brazil 1786-89. The catalog description[1] noted, "1787 6,400 reis. Rio mint. AU details (NCS). Bust of Maria with widow's veil to right, legends and date around/crowned arms. Mount carefully removed at 12:00, heavily hairlined but not exhibiting typical jewelry surfaces. Sharp and with good underlying lustre remaining. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Recorded mintage: 276,000.

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 14.35 grams, 32.30 mm diameter.
