Sincona sale 63, lot 293
Hanau in 1789, between Isenburg and Frankfurt. Munzenberg is to the north, neighboring Solms

This specimen was lot 293 in Sincona sale 63 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$470 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Hanau-Münzenberg, Grafschaft, Wilhelm IX. von Hessen-Kassel 1760-1785. Taler 1778 CLR, Hanau. Unter Vormundschaft seiner Mutter Maria. Ausbeute aus Biberer Gruben. Sehr schön. (Germany, county of Hanau-Münzenberg, William IX of Hesse-Cassel, 1760-85, thaler of 1778, Hanau mint, under the regency of his mother Maria. For the Biberer mine. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1774-78 and is very similar to Dav-2289B. The county of Hanau-Lichtenberg on the Rhine passed to rival Hesse-Darmstadt and eventually to Baden.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
