from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 40349
Colombia SB818-40349r.jpg

This type was struck 1838-46 at Popayán only. The Bogotá mint restricted itself to gold pesos and sixteen pesos during this period. This specimen was lot 40349 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1843-VU 2 Pesos. Popayán mint. AU-55 (PCGS). Lustrous and beautifully toned, with attractive violet and rose shades atop the reverse. A high grade piece with excellent visual appeal, showing just a natural planchet striation that mostly manifests behind the portrait. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Stack's sale of December 1986, lot 1523."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-76; KM-95; Restrepo 202.5.
