This specimen was lot 587 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $302.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Regno d'Italia. Vittorio Emanuele III. 1900-1946. NI 50 Centesimi. Rome mint. Dated 1920 R. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem BU. Full luster. Highest ever graded specimen for date and type. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, June 1974." The fifty centesimi was originally a silver coin struck to the standard of a French half franc but none were struck in silver after 1900. This type of 1919-28 was the first in several decades. It comes in reeded and plain edge varieties. This specimen, a common date, sold for five times the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: 29,450,000.
Specification: 6.1 g, nickel, 24 mm diameter. This specimen Ø23 mm, 6.12 g, 6h axis.
