Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in several centuries, was a Polish celebrity of the first order and even the Communist regime could not pass up the opportunity to issue NCLT's in his honor. Dozens of Polish commemoratives exist with John Paul's portrait; this one notes his death. This specimen was lot 34634 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof 100 Zlotych 2005-MW, Warsaw mint. A choice Proof gold issue featuring Pope John Paul II and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. Sold with box and COA."
Recorded mintage:18,700.
Specification: 8 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter.
