This specimen was lot 23310 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $11,400. The catalog description[2] noted, "Tremendous Quality for this Coveted 10 Rupees Proof Issue, INDIA. 10 Rupees, 1879-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. NGC PROOF-65 Cameo. A wonderful Gem example of the popular and elusive type, this 10 Rupees delivers a full strike and wonderful cameo contrast, with watery fields delineated against limitedly frosted devices. Escaping the normal friction and marking that is often seen on these proof restrikes, making this a premium example worthy of many excited bids." The SCWC notes several varieties of this rare issue. All are restrikes as none were issued for circulation.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7.77 g, 0.917 fine gold.
