This specimen was part of lot 40172 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Pounds, 1981. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo." This type was issued 1980-84 in small numbers and sold as bullion coins. The denomination has not circulated since the time of Edward VII (and probably not much even then). Other gold five pound types have been issued after this one (KM 945, KM 949, KM 958, KM 1003), all for sale to collectors.
Recorded mintage: 5,400.
Specification: 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.177 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-419; S-4201; KM-924.
