This specimen was lot 5309 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[2] noted, "Australia. Threepence, 1960. Elizabeth II. NGC graded Proof 66." The regular issue is common but the proofs are not. The type was struck in large quantities 1955-64 and was the last threepence struck in Australia. An earlier type, struck 1953-54, featured a slightly different obverse legend, "ELIZABETH.II.DEI.GRATIA.REGINA." Sterling coinage ceased after 1964 and in 1966, the Australian dollar was introduced.
Recorded mintage: 19,600,000 plus 1,509 proofs.
Specification: 1.41 g, .500 fine silver, .0226 troy oz ASW, 16 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Mary Gillick and George Kruger-Gray.
