Australia 1960 shilling
The first specimen was lot 5307 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $236. The catalog description[2] noted, "Australia. Shilling, 1960. Elizabeth II. NGC graded Proof 66." The regular issue is common but the proofs are not. The type was struck in large quantities 1955-63 and was the last shilling struck in Australia. An earlier type, struck 1953-54, featured a slightly different obverse legend, "ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA." Sterling coinage ceased after 1964 and in 1966, the Australian dollar was introduced.
Recorded mintage: 14,512,000 plus 1,509 proofs.
Specification: 5.65 g, 0.500 fine silver, .090 troy oz ASW, 24 diameter, reeded edge, designed by Mary Gillick and George Kruger-Gray.
