Künker sale 336, lot 6597

This specimen was lot 6597 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$34,024 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"POMMERN, POMMERN-STETTIN, HERZOGTUM, Philipp II. 1606-1618. 2 Goldgulden 1616, Stettin. + PHILIPPVS · II · DVX · STETIN · POMER Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//SOLI / DEO GL9 / RIA · / · I616 ·, umher Palm- und Lorbeerzweig. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldtönung, fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Hahn, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 224, Osnabrück 2013, Nr. 1076; der Slg. Hermann Vogel, Teil 6, Auktion L. & L. Hamburger 79, Frankfurt/Main 1926, Nr. 4033 und der Slg. Karl-Ludwig Grabow, Berlin. Philipp was the penultimate Duke of Pomerania-Stettin and would die childless, leaving his brother Bogislaw XIV as the last duke who, also dying without issue, would be the last of the male line of the House of Griffins. The lack of clear succession left the Duchy of Pomerania to be divided between Sweden and Brandenburg-Prussia upon the conclusion of the Thirty Years War in 1648. This type of 1616-17 is unpriced in the SCWC.
