Bolivia 1853-PTS FP sol

CNG Lissner sale, lot 1172

This specimen was lot 1172 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $453.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Republic. 1825-present. AR Sol. Potosí mint. Fortunato Equivar, assayer. Dated 1853 PTS FP. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Slightly mottled toning with hints of copper. Beautiful full strike. First year of type and rare in this grade. Only one graded higher." The Potosi mint produced these debased one sol coins 1853-54. These coins, along with contemporary issues from La Paz mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close.
