This specimen was lot 25365 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Alexander I copper 5 Kopecks 1802 EM, Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle / Date and value in circle, MS63 Brown NGC. Reddish-brown patina with slightly grainy surfaces. Very scarce in this condition." Hundreds of millions were issued between the Kolyvan and Ekaterinburg (shown here) mints. Many survive today but few in choice condition. Russia has the distinction of being the first country to issue decimal currency, as 100 kopeks = one ruble. The flat spot at the bottom of this specimen, likely caused by punching the planchet too close to the edge, doesn't seem to have affected the price.
Recorded mintage: 12,592,000.
Specification: copper.
