This specimen was lot 45498 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Java. Duit, 1809. Louis Napoleon. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A fully detailed and decently struck Duit, with dark brown to red brick patina." In 1794, the old United Provinces were overthrown and the Batavian Republic established under the "protection" of the revolutionary French republic. This had little effect in the East Indies and normal trade, carried on by British merchants, continued. In an attempt to force Britain to a trade deal, Napoleon imposed the Continental System (effectively a trade embargo) on all his puppet states. This was widely flouted in the Batavian Republic. Tiring of this, Napoleon abolished the republic in 1806 and installed his brother Louis as king of Holland. Locals in the East Indies acknowledged this by removing the "VOC" from the coinage (see KM 220) and replaced it with the royal monogram "L·N", seen here. Fearful of a trade embargo, the British seized Java in 1811 and occupied it until 1816. This type was struck 1808-10.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.51 g, copper.
