This specimen was lot 1670 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $113.05. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUMATRA: AE keping, 1787/AH1202, British East India Company issue, PCGS graded AU53." The British East India Company held trading stations on the island of Sumatra for decades prior to the Napoleonic Wars. This copper coin, accompanied by two and three kepings and likely made in Birmingham, was issued for use there. As part of the Vienna Congress in 1815, the British surrendered all their holdings in Indonesia to the Dutch in exchange for a free hand in Malaya and Singapore. This type was struck 1786 and 1788 with gilt proofs (KM 257.1a).
