SB222-73608r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73608 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1705-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV. NGC EF-45. Struck over an older coin dated 1695. A well detailed and wholesome survivor, with argent surfaces and some patches of peripheral toning." Shown is a écu aux huit L, deuxieme type (écu with 8 L's, 2nd type) struck for France at the Nantes mint in the later years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck until 1709; there are also quarter and half écus struck during this period with this design. This date is a better date.

Recorded mintage: 106,015, all rf[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 518, Dr/2 no. 436, Dav-1320; KM-360.18; Gad-224.
