Germany 1940-E 2 pfennig

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, part of lot 22755

This specimen is a better date of a series struck 1936-40 during the early years of the Nazi regime in Germany. The "E" mintmark is for the Muldenhutten mint. For a race of Aryan supermen, the Nazis were remarkably unimaginative coin designers and this type is quite dull. This specimen was part of lot 22755 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), which sold for $360. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Third Reich Certified Minor Coinage, 1937-41. KM-89, 90, 91, & 100; J-361, 362, 363, & 370. Reichspfennig (3), 2 Reichspfennig (5), and 5 Reichspfennig (2). 10 pieces in lot. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS."

Recorded mintage: 3,412,000, a better date.

Specification: 3.31 g, bronze, 20.2 mm diameter.
