This specimen was lot 70527 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 4 Escudos, 1784-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-50. A well struck and wholesome example, with the devices, especially upon the reverse, seen in great details. A VERY RARE date with an incredibly small mintage." This type was struck 1773, 1776, 1781-88 but is much rarer than the contemporary eight escudos. The government took over the mint in 1770 and enlarged it, increasing production plus the debasement of 1772 likely caused prior issues to be melted.

Recorded mintage: 816.

Specification: 13.54 g, .901 fine gold, .392 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12697, Fr-16; KM-33.
