In 1999 there was the first visit of a Roman Catholic Pope (John Paul II) to a majority Orthodox country. The event was considered very important for the Christian world. On this occasion the Romanian National Bank issued a gold coin with circulating power in a limited edition of 1000 pieces. The coins are placed in a special box and accompanied by a numbered certificate. The coin depicts Pope John Paul II and Romanian Patriarch Teoctist in front of a Latin cross.

Specification: 31.10 g, .999 fine gold, 35 mm diameter, plain edge.

Maximum mintage: 1000 pieces.

Catalog reference: KM 151.
