Sincona sale 68, lot 5356

This specimen was lot 5440 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 6500 CHF (about US$8,221 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Doppeldukat 1741. Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Lucerne, double ducat of 1741, very rare, good extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 5356 in Sincona sale 68 (Zurich, October 2020), where it sold for 26,000 CHF (about US$34,229 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Lucerne | Stadt und Kanton, Doppeldukat 1741, Luzern. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. (city and canton of Lucerne, double ducat of 1741, Luzern mint. Very rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

The double ducats of Lucerne were struck only for special occasions and are all rare. One, four and five ducats also exist for this date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 7 g, .986 fine gold, this specimen 6,81 g.
