Künker sale 294, lot 4178

This specimen was lot 4178 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €5,750 (about US$7,750 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, SACHSEN-MEININGEN, Georg II. 1866-1914. 10 Mark 1909. R Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz/Stempelglanz. (unified gold coinage, duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, George I, 1886-1914. ten mark of 1909. Scarce, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. The gold issues of this locale are scanty and rare; the other dates of this type are 1902 and 1914.

Recorded mintage: 1,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.98 g, .900 fine gold, .114 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 195, Jaeger-280.
