Heritage sale 3073, lot 33693
Scotland H3073-33693r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33693 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles I 12 Shillings ND (1637-1642) XF45 NGC, Edinburgh mint, Third (Briot's) Issue. Splendidly well-struck for this early milled issue, some minor recutting visible in portions of the legends, while eye-catching cabinet tones appear interwoven throughout the design. From the Lake County Collection." This scarce piece was struck by Nicholas Briot, who attempted to introduce milled coinage to Great Britain. The twelve shillings was probably equal to an English half crown.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: S-5558, KM 82.
