This specimen was lot 22029 in Heritage sale 3005 (Long Beach, May 2009), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Bi-metallic Pattern 500 Pesos 1988, design of KM529, but with brass central core and stainless steel outer ring, unlisted in KM, Choice UNC and very rare." Dozens of different patterns are known from the Mexico City mint from the late 1970's to the present day, more than can be explained by the normal needs of new design proposals. Dark rumors have circulated of mint employees corruptly enriching themselves by fabricating and selling these pieces de caprice, as Walter Breen used to call them, to collectors.
